It's not about me, really

Dani and Elise wanted to hear a little more about my husband’s trip to India last week so instead of devoting a post to the fact that yesterday I spent most of my day in the basement trying to mop up 4 centimetres of water due to a broken water pump, I will tell you a bit more about where my sweetheart went (whose name is Kenneth by the way). I’m thinking you’ll like this post better anyway. It definitely has better pictures!

So, the place he had to travel to is called Mumbai (formerly known as Bombay). Wikipedia tells me it’s the second most populous city in the world and it’s the commercial centre of India. Kenneth told me it was hot and humid and the women dressed in beautiful colourful sari’s. He did see the Gate of India, the first thing visitors arriving by boat see of Mumbai. Wikipedia tells me it looks like this (he didn’t take any camera with him):

Now it is mango season in India. They are very proud of their Alphonso mango’s. Kenneth said there were mango’s everywhere: pieces of fruit to be eaten for breakfast, mango juices freshly squeezed (can you squeeze a mango?), mango for dessert and so on. He brought home over a dozen mango’s. My daughter likes them. I tried a teeny tiny bit. Kenneth said it was a tiny teensy weensy bit. So far as I could tell from that tiny bit it was ‘carrot meets pumpkin’. Not my thing really.

He brought back these handcarved wooden figurines representing the god Ganesh. Wikipedia tells me he is apparently the most worshipped god in India. He is the god of knowledge and wisdom, remover of obstacles and protects travellers. Kenneth told me he bargained for the price and that there were also figurines with an everlasting smell costing 10 times as much.

He also brought back some toys (for the kids obviously) and I got some ALIEN (as in a large bottle of the Thierry Mugler perfume).

I’ve never been to India myself. It’s actually not even on my wish list of places I’d like to visit. I’m sure there are beautiful things to be seen out there, but there are just other places I’d rather see if I were to have the time and money.

Edit:

My wish list includes in random order: Ireland, Scotland, Norway, Australia, New Zealand & Canada

So far I've been to The Netherlands, Germany, France, Spain, Andorra, England & Greece

The furthest I’ve been is to the States.

Where have you been?

Hi Tania,
Looks like your husband brought you some lovely presents back.
When I was in my early 20s (before children), myself and a friend went to Goa for 2 weeks and had a really excellent time. Apart from that I have been to Cyprus and Portugal and that is about it (I am very boring ha ha).
Hope you are all well,
love and hugs, Tabitha XXXX

Hi Tania

Broken water pump in the basement - yikes! What a yukky job, mopping up all that water. I hope everything is getting back to normal in that department and that's the last time you ever have to deal with water in your house anywhere.

I enjoyed learning about Mumbai through Kenneth's trip. It's always fascinating and enlightening learning about other cultures. I love what those figurines represent.

I have never been out of Australia. The travel bug hasn't seemed to have bitten Troy or I - yet. Although when our children are older we would like to take them overseas. Some European countries would be first on our list.

Love
Elise

I am so jealous that he went to India! My brother is living there right now and loves it. Ohhhhh I wish I had the money to visit him. My husband and I backbacked all over Europe before we started a family. Belgium is Beautiful! I have studied in Jerusalem for four months and visited Brazil for a few weeks when I was a teenager. It was amazing because I won an art contest to get there and we stayed right in the center of the rain forest. My family also lived in England when my dad taught at Oxford. One thing i have learned aside from the fact that I love to travel, is that my favorite times are when I am out of money and get to know the people rather than seeing tourists sites! PS Elise, if I lived in Australia I might not leave either, it is next on my dream list! I am so sorry about the water pipe! I hope it gets taken care of without too much trouble!

tania,
a much better post than one of water woes!!! i am so sorry you have had them:/ we occasionally do here when it floods; and it is no fun at all!!!

on the other hand... it sounds like kenneth brought home some real treats (the carvings are beautiful)!!! and, their mangos must be very different from ours. the ones we have are very peach-like. i put them, strawberries, bananas, and fresh mint together and toss with a little orange juice. YUM!!!

i am like you, though, if they taste like a "carrot has met a pumpkin", LOL!!!, i say "yuck", too:o
thank you for the info and the pictures especially given all your water problems...
love and hope you have a great weekend,
dani xx
